Fueling The Passion

September 2011 Newsletter

September sure came around quick! Didn’t summer just start recently? I certainly hope your summer has been a good one. I have been traveling for the past month or so, starting with the Gathering, the San Diego bead show, taught a class, took a workshop, then some much needed R&R. From the warm waters of Mexico to the (still!) snow capped mountains of Mammoth Lakes! But now it’s back to beading and focusing on what the future holds for the So Cal Flame Surfers.

Volunteers needed NOW!

I’m sure you all have heard that many positions are opening up on the SCFS board. This is crucial for the club to stay together, for people to step up and volunteer! We have 9 positions on the board….please take a minute to check them out here: SCFS Board Postions

With this group of 9 people, the work is quite easy, but it is too much for just three, which is all we have so far. Since we only meet 4 times a year, this is a very easy board to be part of. Basically, you just organize the meetings. We will all be there to help you in the beginning. We promise not to “throw you in the water with out a float!” SCFS needs new energy!

If we do not get another group of people, sadly, December will be the very last meeting. No one wants that to happen! Please consider being part of the new board. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to email me! judy@jujeebeads.com

Don McKinneyOur September meeting will be taking place at CBSon Saturday the 17th. We will begin the usual time of 10 am for a 1/2 hour social, 10:30 club biz, then we will immediately move over to the demo area where Don McKinney will be sharing tips and tricks with dichro glass beads! There might even be some dichro for sale like last year….we got first pick!  CBS Directions

Our bead exchange theme is silver and ivory beads. (not silver glass, but silver leaf, wire or mesh on ivory, any style goes) We will provide a sandwich tray and drinks. Please bring a side, salad or sweet to share.

slugThe ISGB Gathering took place over the last weekend of July in Louisville, KY. It was great to see presentations from Heather Trimlett,

Sharon PetersHayley TsangJohn KabukiJC Herrell,Sara Sally LaGrande….to name a few. Not to mention open torch night where anyone could jump on some of the newest torches (check out the new sidewinder!) and/or watch your favorites play, like Kim Fields andTrey Cornette! The bead bazaar is ALL lampwork! It is truly overwhelming (in a fun way) to see bead makersrainbow beadsfrom around the world all in one room! Talk about eye candy! The gallery tour was fun too. A bus continuously shuttled attendees to four different glass and art galleries, where we saw many of our fellow bead makers work displayed. It is quite an experience.

Next year the Gathering will be in Bellevue, WA. (Bellevue is a suburb of Seattle) This is much easier to get to from SoCal and a beautiful place to visit, especially in July! The sun doesn’t go down until 10 pm and it’s usually sunny! The Tacoma Museum of Glass is about 50 miles south of Bellevue so it wouldn’t surprise me if they have an organized tour….or just plan an extra day. There is also a working hot shop/glass gallery downtown Seattle and don’t forget to go shopping at Olympic glass! Be sure to check the ISGB website and sign up (if you haven’t already) to be a member!
