SCFS News – Fall 2020

SCFS News: Fall 2020

Greetings Flame Surfers

I hope that the changing seasons and recent rain has not dampened your enthusiasm for creating with glass. Now that the hot weather is behind us and most holiday celebrations are likely to be from a distance, you should have fewer reasons not to fire up the torch and make wonderful art to share and give.

Thanks to those Flame Surfers that participated in our September Zoom meeting/Bead Challenge event. We had a special opportunity to talk with Dr. Jean Gribbon, Executive Director, and founder of Beads of Courage. We had 9 members donate beads and pendants for the challenge in September, resulting in a total of 363 new donations to Beads of Courage. See below for photos and other information on the Challenge results.

We will not be holding any in-person SCFS events for 2020, but we will have a holiday meeting on Dec. 12. I hope you can join us, participate in the gift exchange (details below), and receive your member reward from SCFS.

Please remember to renew your SCFS membership for 2021. Your dues provide essential funds to support our events (both online and in person) and allow us to continue our special activities for Beads of Courage. Dues for 2021 are $20. New Members: If you join in 2020, your 2021 dues will include access to all upcoming 2020 activities. Please contact our Treasurer Judy Carlson for instructions if you want to pay dues for 2020: judy@jujeebeads.com.You can pay using Venmo by directing payment to the following name: @Judy-Carlson-1. Please contact Membership Chair Susan Haskell: sihaskell@aol.com; or Judy if you want to confirm your membership status for 2020.

The ISGB Gathering will be online again in 2021, from June 10-13. The Gathering theme for 2021 is ‘Reimagine’, a perfect descriptor of the challenges we all have confronted during this year’s pandemic. ISGB has been working hard to develop more online events to provide exciting opportunities to connect and learn with other glass artists. A great example is the new Second Sunday-Creators and Makers series. Every month, this series presents a special tour/interview/demo with leaders in the glass community. Recent events have included a tour of the Corning Museum of Glass and a visit/demo with Jeri Warhaftig. This series is free to ISGB members or available for $10/event. I am looking forward to seeing the next episodes of this series, which will include a visit with Carlo Dona Tools in Murano, Italy, one of the premier makers of glass tools.

Bead Challenge Results

Thanks to all that donated beads in September as part of our Bead Challenge event for Beads of Courage. Our members created a diverse array of beads and pendants. It is always inspiring to see the diversity and creativity on display for this worthy cause. Each participant in the Challenge will be receiving a collection of new and special glass from CIM and Effetre as a reward for you support. Look for your package of glass from Wendy Leys. Here are photos of the submissions. Great job everyone!

December 12 Online Holiday Meeting

  • Saturday, December 12, 10 am – Noon Pacific Time
  • Presentation by Cynthia Konow Brownell: Historical Glass
  • Gift Exchange: Ornaments
  • Get Zoom app to participate: https://zoom.us/

Our December holiday meeting will be held online, using the Zoom conferencing application. You can participate on either a computer or mobile device, but you need to install and test the app in advance of the meeting. Visit: https://zoom.us/ to download the app and learn more. This meeting will be open to all current paid members. We will send you instructions for joining the meeting in a separate email sent a day in advance of the meeting. Please contact Treasurer Judy Carlson if you still need to pay your membership dues: judy@jujeebeads.com

Special Guest. Cynthia Konow Brownell has been making glass beads for over 20 years and has been a historic reenactor for over 40 years.   An interest in mobile wealth led Cynthia to study nomadic cultures.   The Norse were certainly a culture who resettled and traded all over the world from the 7th to the 10th century.  The presentation will focus on grave finds from Sweden and Cynthia’s adventures in recreating these glass treasures.

Show and Tell: What have you been making? All participants will have an opportunity to share news and share what they have been up to. Be sure to have some samples of your latest creations handy to share during our Zoom meeting. Do you have questions about glass techniques or supplies; this meeting is a great chance to ask your expert colleagues.

Ornament Gift Exchange. We will be having a glass ornament gift exchange during our holiday meeting. This gift exchange will be like those we have had during our in-person meetings. Each participant should provide a hanging ornament appropriate for the season and suitable for a variety of faiths. For inspiration, here are some examples, courtesy of Susan Haskell. The only difference for this event is that the maker of the ornament is responsible to mail/deliver their item to whomever wins it during the exchange (think about size/weight for your gift). After the maker describes the piece they have created, we will have a random drawing among the participants to select the winner (no ‘stealing’ for this event).

Member Loyalty Reward. We are grateful for our members that have continued to support the Flame Surfers this year, despite all the challenges and upheavals to our regular events. As a thank you, we will be giving you a gift certificate for Pacific Art Glass to use on your next store purchase. Pacific Art Glass is a key supporter of So Cal Flame Surfers, so be sure to consider them first when buying your glass supplies.

Beads of Courage Donations. Wendy Leys, our BOC coordinator, is happy to receive your donations and ship them to BOC headquarters for you. Please contact Wendy to arrange a bead drop off or pickup: firesinger1@gmail.com. Of course, you can always ship your beads directly to Beads of Courage; but be sure to let Wendy know what you have donated so that we can get an accurate count of SCFS member contributions.

Hope to see you virtually on Dec 12.

Thanks for your support and enthusiasm,

Steve Bay

President, So Cal Flame Surfers
