May 2011 Newsletter

Hi there!

I hope you are all enjoying our lovely So Cal springtime so far. April certainly was a busy month for us glassy guys and gals!

BeadsThe month of April kicked off with style in Las Vegas for the Glass Craft Expo! All the usual glass vendors were there along with many glass artists in all areas of glass art. Stained glass, fusing, lampwork, glass bowing…you name it, they had it! Always a fun weekend!

May and June are also quite busy, at least for me. So I am combining the two into one newsletter. I will send out a meeting reminder a few days prior.

All photos in this issue were taken at the BOC event! Be sure to check out the Beads of Courage website for a link to the KTLA newscast! (coming soon!)

BOC eventOn April 16th, the SCFS along with CBS hosted our first (maybe annual) Beads of CourageChallenge and Fund Raiser. What a great day this turned out to be! And a HUG THANK YOU to all who attended and supported the day! Our bead makers made a total of 159 usable beads, which included 20 purple hearts! Beads of Courage raised $4560 all in one day! Not to mention TONS of donated beads to add to their never ending need for beads!

RaceCarOne touching moment was when Jean came in to the bead making room with a little boy named Jack. Jack had recently begun cancer treatments at nearby CHOC hospital and new to the BOC program. Jean wanted to get him caught up with his beads. She asked him what his “dream bead” would be and he requested a race car. A newbie to SCFS, Chris Knealy, stepped up to the plate and volunteered to make the bead. Check out the final  (keep in mind, Chris normally works with boro!)

I would like to thank the following SCFS members that helped us out that day!
Dave Holton, Dee Frey, Karen Fox, Toni Tracey, Pam Hogarth, Heather Trimlett, Cathi Milligan, Charlotte Barnard, Katherine Nakazono, Alaina Oreman, Barbara Birbeck, Bindy Lambell, Charlie Warner, Donna Conklin, Holly Hughes, StacyLynn Russom, Judy Beard, Linda Ames, Maggie Vigil, Suzanne Hansen, Susan Walter, Chris Knealy, DeLynn Moultier, Brooke Leys-Campeau, Cynthia DeLeon, Lisa Marlin, Kathy Spignese, Norma Spignese, Stacey Peterson and a big HUGE thank you to WENDY LEYS who brought this whole day together! I truly hope I have not left out anyone who is on our mailing list! We could not have had the success of the day if it had not been for you all! And a HUGE thank you to Dana Baldwin and Don McKinney who contributed so much, we could not have done this with out them!
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

heartsThe Saturday following the BOC event in OC found several of us back in the OC for the Orange County Bead Society Art of Adoring Bead show. The weather was perfect for an outside art bead show.

What next you ask?? Well….we have our 2nd quarterly meeting coming up on June 18th at the Mandrel in Redondo Beach. Please make your plans to join us! We will be talking about our great BOC event day and give you more details on our upcoming challenges. Donna Conklin will be demoing silver glass techniques. Our food theme will be our usual “salad bar” pot luck and our bead exchange theme is “TWISTIES!” Make any kind of bead you like, just be sure it has a twistie incorporated in it!

Check out the local studios and upcoming classes on our website!

The ISGB Gathering registration is now open for everyone. The event will take place July 28th thru July 31st. For more information, please visit the ISGB website HERE.

Our good friend, Hayley Tsang, who is our current ISGB West Coast regional director, is running for the same position. Cast your vote for Hayley today. Let’s keep her there! You must be a current ISGB member to vote.

And speaking of voting for board members….the SCFS board members volunteer for two year terms in each position. Our “term” was to be done this past April, but with all the planning and organizing of the BOC event, quite honestly, we forgot! (that’s how much fun it is!)

But there are a few of us who are ready to move on, either changing to a new position or taking a break for a while. Please consider volunteering to take on a position on the SCFS board. We will begin voting at the end of this year. I will write more detail in the next newsletter, but in the meantime, think about it. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me!

Cheers~
