June 2010 Newsletter

So Cal Flame Surfers June Newsletter
Cheers to Summer!

Well…I am still trying to catch my breath from April and May…four shows in 1 1/2 months was a LOT for me to take on….but I’m catching up and I have SO much to talk about! The SCFS news is below, but first I would like to focus on our club’s involvement with Beads of Courage (BOC), which is growing more and more.

BOCI’m sure most of you are familiar with BOC, if not, please check out their website and learn about them! As a club we have become a nice support to BOC in both bead and monetary donations, but we are getting ready dive in to a new adventure. As details progress, I will share with you in the upcoming newsletters. Basically, we would like to get more involved with this amazing organization and help them as best we can.

Beads of CourageJean Baruch, founder of Beads of Courage, came to So Cal last week and met with the SCFS board to discuss what we can do together. I have to say, she is one of the most inspirational speakers I have ever heard and seen! You feel her excitement and passion behind the BOC program with every word she speaks….and her smile. We all learned so much about BOC and everyone of us wanted to go home and make purple hearts for the rest of the day! Truly, it was quite a moving speech and afternoon. Yes, we will work on getting her to one of our general meetings too!

Beads of CourageOne way we have begun to help BOC is through our new Bead Challenge, which we held on April 17th at Pacific Art Glass (this was open to ALL).
A group of us got together to make beads for few hours, especially purple hearts which are given to children for the completion of treatments. Fortunately, with modern medicine, many of the children are cured and purple hearts are always in high demand at BOC. We had great time all torching together and got a total of 38 beads made, several being purple hearts! We plan on having another challenge sometime in July. I will announce the date as soon as confirm.

Special thank you’s to Wendy Leys, StacyLynn Russom, Judy Beard and John Williams for putting this event together.

Since I write the newsletter, I typically do not promote my own work. But I do feel like sharing an exciting story about one of my frog beads. BOC called for entries back in March for Space themed beads to be sent in and juried for a very special ride in the last Atlantis space shuttle flight STS-132 before it retires. Well, my little “Buzz, the Space Frog” was lucky enough to be one of the beads chosen and he just got back last Wednesday from the ride of his life!

Buzz the Space Frog

Beads in SpaceA total of 17 were on the flight to help bring awareness, and most likely, some much needed funds to BOC. Please check out the BOC website for all the details….and if you feel like it, an article about “Buzz” that appeared in my local paper. The space beads are preparing to go “on tour” to the children’s hospitals that support the BOC program.

We usually collect beads for BOC at our holiday meeting, but YOU, as an individual, can donate an time you want! Check out the BOC website for donation info. Thank you for your support!

The MandrelOkay, now back to the regularly scheduled news….our next SCFS meeting will be held on June 19th at The Mandrel in Redondo Beach. We are very excited to welcome DeAnne Buchanan who will be demoing “making a murrini”. And not just a simple barrel with stripes, this will be much more complex and informative. So please make your plans to come to The Mandrel and have some fun! Our bead exchange theme will be marbles OR florals. If you have been meaning to work on either one…let this be your inspiration! Be sure to wrap your piece of art and include your name and/or card so the recipient can thank you! We will have a salad bar type of pot luck, so please bring a little something to share.

Coatings By SandbergLooking ahead, we are very excited to be having our next meeting, September 18th, at CBS in City of Orange! I think most of you know CBS, which stands forCoatings By Sandberg, THE home of that sparkly and irresistible dichroic glass! And it gets better, the very talented Don McKinney will be demoing! Don is a regular instructor at CBS and extremely proficient with dicro glass! We are happy to have CBS host a meeting for us and I hope this will entice more of you folks from OC and San Diego area to come join us! More info in next newsletter, but mark your calendars now!

The GatheringThe Gathering and the Beadable Object Project
The ISGB Gathering is happening this July in Rochester, NY. This is a stock full weekend of glass, glass and more GLASS! Demos galore, open torch, classes, bead bazaar, bead swap, a tour of the Corning Glass Museum…and that’s just to name a few things! Check out the ISGB website for more info.

We are still planning on entering in the Beadable Object Project. This is a combined event for both individuals and ISGB sub-chapter groups. So we, SCFS, are going to enter and try to win the prestigious Best of Show plaque from the Bead Pen Group. The contest consists of decorating a utensil set (2 spoons, a fork and 2 knives) plus we are adding a candle stick holder. We have a few other members contributing a fused glass plate, a napkin with napkin beaded napkin ring and place mat. (Thank you Susan, Stacy and Bindy!)

beach glassOur theme is going to be a beach theme…what else, we’re So Cal!

What we need: Beads! Glass colors in the aqua blues, bright greens, teals and beige, think tropical sand and seas! Please keep beads small, we want to include as many as we can. Beads should be with in the theme in both color and character and made on a 3/32 mandrel. Beads must be properly annealed, holes must be clean and no sharp edges please.

The beads used on the utensils will be at the discretion of the SCFS board. Any beads not used will be donated to the BOC. Please include your name with the beads. We still need a few more so we will be accepting beads at the June meeting, so bring ‘em on in! We will have a list of everyone who donated, whether or not your beads are used.

Bead shows and classes…
StacyLynn Russom has been holding workshops in both beginning and intermediate bead making at Pacific Art Glass , maybe you have a friend that wants to learn how to make beads! Our own Bindy Lambell will be teaching a one day holiday sculptural bead class at The Mandrel at the end of this month. Donna has been adding some one day workshops, including an open torch with Loco!
Or maybe you want to gain more experience with dichroic glass, check out the CBS line up!

All of these studios are on our website for your convenience!

We hope to see you at one of the upcoming classes and for sure at the June 19th meeting. Until then, happy torching!

Cheers,
