January 2010 Newsletter

Happpy New Year
Cheers to a very happy and healthy 2010!

January 2010 conversation between SCFS  prez Judy Carlson (JC) and SCFS member (scfsm) who was unable to attend 2009 holiday meeting:

scfsm: Hi Judy, happy new year!

JC: Hi there, same to you. Hope you had a wonderful holiday season.

scfsm: I did, thanks. What have you been doing lately?

Judy CarlsonJC: Well, for the past month, I have been busy on the torch using my brand new oxygen concentrator that I won at the big SCFS holiday meeting (I bought lots of tickets!) that was held last month at Pacific Art Glass!

scfsm: Wow! That’s a nice prize. What else did they have??

JC: Well, in addition to the holiday gift bag with a sampler bottle of Fusion bead release and new hollow mandrel, there were a ton of raffle prizes, like tools from Jim Moore & Cattwalk, gift certificates from Arrow Springs and Cattwalk, books, dicro, all sorts of glass bundles, including Double Helix, Effetre, boro, plus plenty of other goodies! And the food, awesome!

Foodscfsm: I was too busy, but I sure wish I could have made it. It’s fun to get together with other bead makers to share ideas, mingle and get inspired. You know, I have bags of beads that I just don’t know what to do with!

JC: It is true, we do get inspired by others. That’s why these quarterly group meetings are really important. Not only are they inspirational to make beads, but maybe to get ideas of for beads and wearbale art creations, plus we can help others in need.

scfsm: What do you mean…help others in need?

Beads of CourageJC: For instance, our holiday meeting was our third annual Beads of Courage (BOC) collection. Not only do we collect beads for the foundation, we encourage raffle ticket sales because we give a portion to BOC.

scfsm: That’s great! How did it go last year?

JC: We collected 16 lbs of beads! (thank goodness for the USPS flat rate boxes!) and were able to send them $300 in a cash donation.

scfsm: That is really wonderful I know they need help, so it is great that SCFS can be generous with their funds. How do I learn more about BOC?

JC: We are a nonprofit, so other than keeping up expenses for our meetings, it is our pleasure, as a club, to be able to help out organizations such as BOC. Just click on theHERE for more info.

scfsm: I sure hope I can make it to the next meeting, when is it? and where?

JC: Our next SCFS meeting will be held at Pacific Art Glass (PAG) on Saturday, March 13th, usual start time of 10 am. You can always get the latest info on our website at scfs.org

Pasadena Bead and Design Showscfsm: So what else is going on in the bead world?

JC: Well, now that you ask, it’s the start of another busy bead season! Next weekend, January 14th thru the 17th is the Pasadena Bead and Design Show at the Pasadena Hilton. You can get more info here:

Tucson Jewelry showAnd then the Tucson Bead shows will be starting the first weekend of February. (sorry football fans, yes, right through Superbowl!) You can check out all the bead show schedules HERE!

And since you asked, looking ahead a little is the Las Vegas Glasscraft Expo. Last year was better than ever! They held the first International Flame off and let me tell you, the glass art that was created is beyond believable! Like the 10’ high glass rocking chari! Check out the website for info exhibit info, classes and all of the amazing creations from last years flame off!

Flow Magazinescfsm: Jeez, that’s a lot! I guess I better get busy with my calendar. Hey, did I see one of your beads in the latest issue of The Flow magazine?

JC: Why yes (blushing), and not only mine but other SCFS’s were juried in, including Barbara Birbeck, Donna Conklin, Rose Klapman and Bindy Lambell.

scfsm: How did you all get your beads in there?

JC: We all submitted a photo of our work last September. This is the 5th annual Woman’s issue. I try to let members aware of info about things like this, including deadlines, through our newsletters, website and meeting announcements. You can always check out the Flow website HERE. Also, check out GlassLine magazine which also has a very helpful online forum. Also, be sure to check our our newest Featured Artist, Ms. Stacy Lynne Russom, coming soon the SCFS Featured Artist page!

scfsm: Thanks….I’ll be sure to check them out. I’m also thinking about taking more classes this year, any suggestions?

JC: My goodness…..we are very lucky here in So Cal to have several glass studios that have amazing artists coming in to teach at The Mandrel and PAG, plus many other studios in the OC and San Diego area. Check out our SCFS website for up to date class info.

scfsm: I’m going to check it out right now. Thanks again for all the info you provided here!

Pacific Art GlassJC: My pleasure! Well, better go get busy, lots of beads need to be made.  I sure hope to see you at the next SCFS meeting at PAG in March!

scfsm: You betchya, I can see PAG from my house! I’m going to make it a goal to make every SCFS meeting in 2010!

JC: That’s a great goal….our 2010 schedule should be up on the website shortly.

Looking forward to seeing you again soon!

Cheers~
