February 2010 Newsletter

Happy February!

SCFS first meeting of 2010 on March 13th!

fishIt’s just around the corner, so mark your calendars and make your plans to join us at Pacific Art Glass on Saturday, March 13th.  As usual, the meeting will start at 10 am. We are very excited to have the lovely Katie O’Meara and her handsome valentine, Brian Mortensen demoing from….get this….their new mobile studio! Brian and Katie can now travel from Alaska to Arizona….and every where in between and still play with glass the whole way in their new trailer! Brian will be making a gorgeous marble and Katie will then embellish it with one of her adorable sea critters! I’m sure you will learn many tips and tricks watching these two artists at work!

swirlOur bead exchange theme is “Shards!”. If you attended the December holiday meeting, you were treated to Charlie demoing how to make your own shards plus you got a goodie bag with a hollow mandrel good for making shards and small blown objects.  We will have a pot luck snack bar, please bring something to share!

Beads of Courage receives lots of beads from SCFS!

Beads of CourageThe So Cal Flame Surfers have been a contributer to Beads of Courage for a couple of years now. Our holiday meeting BOC collection of donated beads topped the scales to 16 lbs of beads! PLUS, we also donated $300 cash! Thanks to all of our members who donated beads and buy raffle tickets! This is how we are able to give cash donations to a wonderful organization like BOC.

This is Jeanne Baruch, Executive Director and Founder of BOC, holding up the 16lb box of beads that I delivered during a recent BOC reception in Tucson. We are hoping to be more involved with BOC during 2010. Stay tuned…..

BindyTucson Bead Shows and Flame Off…
As most of you know, Tucson becomes a bead and gem extravaganza in early February. There are 5 or 6 major bead shows, along with huge precious gem shows and vendors that just open their hotel room doors to sell their goods! It’s crazy…and-oh-so fun! You will recognize many friendly faces, like this cutey on to the left! (Our own Bindy at the Best Bead Show) While also having a booth at the Best Bead Show, silicasI was honored to part of the Silica Sirens team, along with Kim Fields and JC Herrell for an Invitational Flame Off hosted bySonoran Glass Art Academy. And even more excited to say that our piece came in first place! Click HERE to see all of the amazing pieces created that evening!

Well I believe that is all the news I have for you right now. I hope to see you all at next months meeting.

Cheers~

Rich Shelby is hoping members could look around their work spaces and bring any shorts and broken COE 104 glass that they do not plan on using for him to the meeting on March 13th.
