April Newsletter
Lots of news, please read through!

gerbersHappy Spring time! The sun is shining, trees are turning green, flowers are peaking through and we are almost done with rain (?). The air is still cool and crisp, which all adds up to perfect torching weather! The new season is always inspirational, whether is the spring colors or the recent demos we have been treated to at the SCFS meetings. Or maybe it was one of the classes available in our area.

BOCWhat ever inspires you, let’s bring that inspiration to our first BEADS OF COURAGE CHALLENGE at Pacific Art Glass on April 17th. This is a great opportunity for everyone, especially those who do not have a torch set up of their own. And it’s just fun to have a social torch session! All of the beads made will be donated to Beads of Courage (BOC) to help children gong through cancer treatments. Our plan is to have 8 torches set up, beginning at 9 am and go until 2 pm. We are supplying almost everything! Please bring your safety glasses and favorite tools. We will supply most of the glass, but you are welcome to bring some too. (great way to use up some of your shorts) Snacks will also be provided, but feel free to bring munchies. Be sure to give big thank you’s to Wendy Leys, StacyLynn Russom for organizing this event. And especially, to John Williams of Pacific Art Glassfor his huge contribution to this event as well as support of the SCFS!

KatiBrianOur march meeting was so much fun! We had a great turnout and how cool was our demo! Kati and Brian had there mobile studio parked outside of PAG and we all went out there to watch them make a beautiful collaborative fish in sea grass on top of a vortex base! It was really fun and it’s always a pleasure to have Kati and Brian visit. Thanks K&B! And thank you for donating your beautiful work to our raffle. David got lucky!

Our next meeting will be at The Mandrel on June 19th. Please make your plans to join us! The bead exchange theme is your choice of either marbles (challenge yourself!) or florals. More meeting info in next months newsletter.

UtensilsThe Gathering and the Beadable Object Project
The ISGB Gathering is happening this July in Rocehster, NY. This is a stock full weekend of glass, glass and more GLASS! Demos galore, open torch, classes, bead bazaar, bead swap, a tour of the Corning Glass Museum…and that’s just to name a few things! Check out the ISGBwebsite for more info. Registration is now open for ALL!

One of the many events and fund raisers at the 2010 Gathering is the Beadable Object Project. This is a combined event for both individuals and ISGB sub-chapter groups. So we, SCFS, are going to enter and try to win the prestigious Best of Show plaque from the Bead Pen Group. The contest consists of decorating a utensil set (2 spoons, a fork and knife) plus we are adding a candle stick holder. We have a few other members contributing a fused glass plate, a napkin with napkin beaded napkin ring and place mat. (Thank you Susan, Stacy and Bindy!)

There are a few ways to get the beads to us. You can mail them to me, Judy Carlson, 2605 Armour Lane, Redondo Beach, CA 90278 OR you can bring them to The Mandrel in person (DO NOT MAIL beads to the Mandrel). Donna is giving you some incentive…bring beads in person to The Mandrel and receive 10% off any purchase that day! What a deal! Deadline will be Sunday, June 6th, so we can have the project put together by the meeting on the 19th for all to see! The beads used on the utensils will be at the discretion of the SCFS board. Any beads not used will be donated to the BOC. Please include your name with the beads. We will have a list of everyone who donated, whether or not your beads are used.
