SCFS News: Fall 2021

President’s Corner

Fall Greetings to So Cal Flame Surfers!

As we near the end of 2021, we can all be thankful for literally surviving another challenging pandemic year.  My thanks to you Flame Surfers for the support you have shown to our chapter and Beads of Courage over the last year. We restarted in-person meetings with a new monthly social flameworking get together that we call Studio 104, hosted by David Keith in Culver City. These gatherings have provided a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with colleagues and make beads for Beads of Courage. We hope to continue this event next year and hope more of you can join us.

Another highlight was a special bead event for Beads of Courage teen members and staff from CHOC hospital, held at Orange County Fine Arts in Santa Ana on Oct 2. Many thanks to all that could attend and share their love of glass and polymer beads with our visitors. Special thanks to Judy Carlson, Susan Haskell, and Cynthia Konow-Brownell for working live on the torches to make special beads for our guests. Great work under the pressure of an audience!
Also, many thanks to you Flame Surfers for your bead and pendant donations for Beads of Courage. We used many of these for a bead stringing activity during the CHOC event, and the remainder have been sent to Beads of Courage in Tucson.

We have two remaining events for 2021 and hope you can join us for both. Our final Studio 104 gathering is this Wednesday (Nov. 10) from 10am -3pm. Contact David Keith for details – see newsletter for contact info. Bring some fun food to share and glasses to create something on the torch!
Our holiday meeting will be Saturday, December 4. See below for details. This event is for current SCFS members. You can join or renew your membership for 2022 ($20) at the event, which will include this Holiday Bash.

December 4 Holiday Bash

  • Saturday, December 4, 11 am – 3pm
  • Wendy Leys’ House, 1372 Cameo Dr., Tustin, CA

Our 2021 Holiday Bash will be held at Wendy Leys’ home in Tustin. Please note the extended the meeting time to allow everyone plenty of time to eat and enjoy each other’s company.
Potluck. Bring a side dish or dessert to share; we will provide a hot main dish and drinks.
Show and tell. Bring some of your recent creations for us to admire so we can all learn what you have been up to.
Demo/Open Torch. We will have several torches set up for you to try your hand at making a blown ornament using Glaskolben, premade soft glass tubes. We have supplies for everyone to try and we will give a demo to show the process. If you want to see the process in advance, watch this video: https://youtu.be/Sd-dtdcVoOI
Holiday Gift Exchange. Please bring in a wrapped glass item of your creation, or a surplus tool, book or other item of interest to a glass artist. We’ll exchange the gifts by random drawing.
Beads of Courage Donation. Please remember to bring your Courage beads for donation at the meeting. Courage beads are always in short supply. Get a jump on spring cleaning by cleaning out your stash of old beads and donate them to BOC. Courage beads are those with a special theme, size, texture, or sculptural element (without exposed reactive glass). Your orphan beads make perfect Courage beads, so clean out your inventory and give encouragement to a child.
See you on December 4,
Steve Bay
