Fueling The Passion

March 2011 Newsletter

hummingbirdTime is flying by and we are entering a very busy season for the So Cal Flame Surfers! Not only do we have our first meeting of the year on March 19th, but we are just a little over a month away from our first official Beads of Courage Challenge! Please read through, lots of info for both plus more about upcoming bead shows and classes!

Bring quarters to the meeting!

Our first meeting of the year will be on March 19th at The Glass Studio in Highland Park, Los Angeles. We hope you will join us at Cathi Milligan’s new studio. Cathi will be demoing vitrgraph twisties and then have torches set up if you would like to try working with them. If you are not familiar with vitrgraph, just picture a hanging fire brick box dripping with molten glass from a hole in the bottom….like lava from a tube! Anyway, it’s a great demo and I hope you will join us at this new meeting venue. Please be aware that most of the parking is metered, so bring your quarters. The street right in front of the shop is limited time, but just around the corner is either neighborhood parking (it’s free!) or larger metered lots with longer term parking.

Our bead exchange theme is “potpourri” so anything goes! Be sure to wrap up you r bead nicely and put your name or biz card inside so the recipient knows who to thank! for their beautiful bead! Light sandwiches will be provided, but please bring a side or sweet to add to the table.

Beads of Courage Bead Challenge!

Last year we got together a few times at Pacific Art Glass and made beads for BOC. That was fun, but this is HUGE! The Beads of Courage team, including Jean Baruch and Lori Greenberg will all be at CBS for this event. We are expecting to have children who are actually in the BOC program from nearby hospitals, visit us on this day. we will have on going bead making (Yes, we still need more bead makers to make beads with us!) plus demos from Don McKinney in the “hot shop”. The kids will be able to see how there little glass treasures are actually made! We will also have a “make & take” table set up for kids (of all ages, big and small) to put together bead bracelets.

Beads of Courage

There will be a raffle for beads and other fun items, plus a boutique set up to sell finished pieces. You must be a volunteer to sell your jewelry/work and 50% goes to BOC. Please save the date and plan on joining us. We have lots of volunteer spots to fill. It’s only a 2 hour minimum! You can email me at judy@jujeebeads.com to get on the list. Please include your phone number and time preferences, if you have any.

The event will start at 10 am and end at 4 pm. We are still working out details so more to come, stay tuned!

 Beads in space

On another Beads of Courage subject, last month BOC chose 39 beads to be on the next, and very last NASA Space Shuttle Endeavor, mission STS-134. I am thrilled to announce that 2 SCFS will have their beads be part of this mission! Dee Frey and Judy Carlson (yes, blushing, me) both will have (coincidentally) a space kitty bead on this flight. We were  extremely excited to learn this news. This is a huge honor for both ourselves, all the others bead artists and of course, Beads of Courage!
Bead Shows and Classes

The ISGB Gathering will be taking place the last weekend in July. I just had a look at the instructors, like Sharon Peters, Dora Shubert, JC Herrell and Hayley Tsang, just to name a few. It’s going to be a tough choice, and a very fun time in Kentucky! You must be a member of the ISGB and registration opens on March 28th!

The Bead Society of Los Angeles will be holding their Spring Bead Bazaar a month early on Sunday, March 20th. Free Parking!

Las Vegas Glass Expo starts on March 30th thru April 3rd. Tons of classes, plus a 3 day glass and bead expo. All the big vendors attend this show. And hey, it VEGAS, it’s FUN!

Bead Society of Orange County will hold their one day The Art of Adoring Annual Bead Bazaar at Bower’s Museum on April 23rd from 10 to 4. This is a wonderful, outside bead show. Lots of goodies, plus you can check out the museum when you’re done shopping!
